Art & Art-ache
This series examines relationships between famous couples—married or bound by affairs—and how love, conflict, and creativity shaped one another’s work. The project focuses on Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Gustav and Alma Mahler, Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel. Each relationship was marked by turmoil, ending in divorce (Diego and Frida), an affair (Alma), or complete mental breakdown (Claudel).
In Diego and Frida, clashing colors and reversed typography reflect creative differences, mutual independence, competition and rivalry. In Gustav and Alma, Alma’s colors fade, echoing Gustav’s demand that she abandon her composing as his career moved into the spotlight. In Rodin and Claudel, their names form a fractured sculptural structure, with cracks suggesting both the collapse of their relationship and Camille’s emotional breakdown leading to institutionalization.
